The Work/Life Balance-Balance

For working moms, I have to say work/life balance is complete baloney! If you think about working an 8 hour day, add in a 30-45 minute commute to the office and then again back home. By the time we get to the kids, it's dinner (probably takeout), bath time, story time and then bed. ~And Repeat!

I started job hunting again after an extended maternity leave as a result of the pandemic and suffice to say, the process had me thinking about all these components and questioning the balance bit especially! Fast forward to salary negotiations and the mention of overtime left a bad taste in my mouth mainly because of what it really meant. Those extended hours while they come with supplemental income, they also severely encroach on much needed time with my family and the reason I am doing all this in the first place.

The Takeaway:

  1. May be this 40 hour week needs a revision

  2. Remote working should be embraced more post pandemic

  3. Overtime would be far more attractive if it could be done remotely ( Some tech companies seem to have embraced this)

  4. A hybrid working model would be great for those that want both options
